"Irish mail on Sunday" 14th October 2007 by Philip Nolan

Quoted from an article about Adelaide...

"My Accommodation is unique. I am staying at 'Bishop's Garden' a private home that is part of the North Adelaide Heritage Group (among others, you can stay in an old Fire House with a tender at the end of your bed). Run by Rodney and Regina Twiss, he of Irish Ancestry, she of more recent Czech Vintage, it offers a chance to stay in a historic property and has every convenience you can think of (in the middle of my three-week jaint, i got great value out of the washer-dryer) The friendly couple live next door to the Bishop's Garden and they invited me for a glass of wine; you will find no more gracious host's in this very gracious city."

We are a "Frommer' Best"

January 2008

North Adelaide Heritage Group has been acknowledged by Frommer's Guide to Australia (one the the world's No. 1. Travel Book) as one of only 6, Best of Australia, Best moderately priced Accommodations in Australia. This is an accolade we are very proud to receive.

25 September 2007

Today it is a warm and sunny 32 degrees. It was magnificent walking around the lovely lawns and gardens at our 'Buxton Manor' in the city enclave of North Adelaide. The ambience of the property is such a contrast to the crowded pavements and traffic noise of the commercial downtown area at this time of day.

The standard roses are growing profusely as are the expansive green lawns. It was heavenly and quiet as all our guests had departed on their journeys around Australia. if only I had the time to fire up the Barbecue and invite a few friends around.....

But what an excellent opportunity for you, our guests to enjoy!!

Buxton Manor

 31 August 2007

Owner Rodney Twiss, with his Rolls Royce Silver Shadow I, outside of Buxton Manor, with guest Ralph Junghanns, proprieter of Global Bike Tours, setting off with his brave team of hardy South Island New Zealanders on a 6 day bike journey along the wild Southern shores of Australia; from Adelaide via the Coorong (with his friend Jock Venstra, from Spirit Australia Cruises), to ultimately Melbourne.

Having covered this route a number of times we can certainly recommend this Unique Coastal Journey!

Rodney and the Bike Riders

 19th August 2007

The Bentley Drivers Club (S.A.) Inc. boasted an action filled day on sunny sunday with visits to the glorious Adelaide Botanic Park, the historic grounds (82 acres) of Australia's finest school, Saint Peters College and the immensely interesting workshop of Gavin Sandford-Morgan's AOM with its bevy of collectable cars being restored.

Then onto the Fire Station Inn of North Adelaide, where hosts Rodney and Regina Twiss combined with Adelaide Cellar Door Proprietor, Jane Harris to present a selected small brand wine tasting mainly from Kangaroo Island, a region we all adore.

* If you would like to order these wines, predominantly from Kangaroo Island, that the Twiss's and their guests drink, (and often include in value added Special Romantic Packages) from Adelaide Cellar Door, please download the order form.

The 50 or so Club members were most amazed by the friendly, exciting and ambient atmosphere so prevelent in the Fire Engine Suite.

Then on to the Lion Hotel, restaurant for a long lunch with Adelaide Hills Savingnon Blanc.

Some of you may remember a few years ago we purchased the "Dover Castle" Hotel. A 150 year old Heritage listed Historic Hotel in North Adelaide with a fabulous Art Nouveau appearance which we very successfully altered into two houses with the Hotel license being sold to enable the "Archer" Hotel to come into existence.
(The Archer is well worth visiting when you are in North Adelaide)

We now have 4 sandstone faced two story dormer topped terrace homes which compliment this lovely historic terraced street, admirably.

One of these Dover Castle terraces has become part of our accommodation experience with our well known heated floors and ducted air conditioning, stylish well equipped gourmet kitchen (this one with a Swiss made Franke 5 burner hot plate & stove) spa bathroom, private courtyard and parking for two cars.

Luxury boutique family accommodation at its best- your very own terrace home in one of the loveliest streets in the loveliest part of the City.

September 2004
Waterfalls
This winter after years of near drought conditions we have been blessed with heavy rainfall leading to all our rivers, streams & water courses running vigorously.

In our surrounding lush foothills, only 20 minutes drive from North Adelaide, we have some wonderful protected pristine bushland with marvellous paths and most importantly, Waterfalls. A number of which we have been visiting as a family each Sunday.

In our experience this woodland country with its swirling clouds with glimpses through the blue green towering Gum trees of Adelaide city is sensational.

During our walks we have been delighted with our encounters with blue tipped Willy Wag Tails, wild Koalas, Australian Blue Bells, River She Oaks and scenic vista in our beautiful Mount Lofty Ranges

July 2004 Regina's Birthday Bash

Regina celebrated her birthday with a chic dinner at Jolly's Boathouse hosted by her husband Rodney Twiss.

Guests included Catriona MacLachlan, Gwynalyn Paine, Robert & Janice Barbaro, and Colin & Sue Caudell

" Rodney Twiss drives Emma Catherwood (North Adelaide Heritage Groups, Sales and Reservations Manager, the one you speak to on the phone! ) in his 1979 Rolls Royce, on her wedding day.

Emma married Andrew Sweet at the 1870's Bluestone, St Johns Anglican church at Norton Summit, followed by a fun reception at the Normanville Surf Lifesaving club.

Regina Twiss followed the bridal car in her T2 Bentley full of Bridesmaids. Rodney & Regina Twiss danced late into the night & Rodney believes " it was the best wedding he
has ever attended!"

North Adelaide News

North Adelaide experienced quite a lot of property updates & renovations during 2003
After extensive renovations to the original former Huntsman Hotel (c.1880's) in O'Connell Street the upmarket Archer Hotel was launched, complete with the expansive upstairs balcony, which is an ideal place for for an evening meal during the warmer months in Adelaide. Upstairs at the Archer also features a cocktails bar, and large plazma screens for entertainment.....
The Archer is open early in the morning for breakfast

The Queen's Head Hotel which was first licensed on the 17th July 1838, making it Adelaide's oldest hotel still in an original building, and located in Kermode Street, North Adelaide, also experienced an internal makeover. This hotel is notable for it's quiet secluded beer garden at the rear. It is also very close to Adelaide's world famous cricket ground. If you visit The Queen's head check out the old Adelaide Cricket Grounds photos adorning the walls.

The Caledonian Hotel now with well known Adelaide hotelier Rod Said at the helm and located at the entrance to North Adelaide in O'Connell Street, was also sympathetically renovated, with the addition of covered alfresco dining, with an refreshing outlook over the relaxing North Adelaide parklands.

Robert Barbero from Scuzzi is now 2/3rds the way through a new restaurant and bar development just 2 doors down from his existing and popular Scuzzi Cafe. The restaurant is to be called "Live Bait" and will feature two levels of dining, complete with an upstairs balcony with an outlook over O'Connell Street.

The Kentish Arms Hotel in Stanley Street, the birthplace of South Australian cricket, continued to be a great place for a refreshing ale, or an evening meal after a stroll through North Adelaide's historic streets.
The original owner of the Kentish Arms brought the first cricket equipment to South Australia from England, and the early matches were played on a cricket pitch in the nearby parklands, before The Adelaide Cricket Pitch was established.

The Lion Hotel in Melbourne Street, North Adelaide continued winning awards for it's a stylish restaurant which is always attracting new patrons keen to experience The Lion's renowned food and sophistication.
The Lion bar is a great place for a refreshing Coopers Pale Ale and features a sophisticated environment in cool green glass, stainless steel and leather.

The popular free Adelaide Connector bus service was upgraded in 2003 and now runs 7 days a week, except public holidays. The bus service provides an easy method of travel into Adelaide's CBD and passes many of Adelaide popular tourist destinations. The free bus service is provided by The Adelaide City Council.

Update On Properties
03/04

Buxton Manor Mansion continues to be incredibly popular
international destination for travelers to Adelaide who enjoy the enormous ever-growing, ever flowering gardens, English hedges & sweeping private lawns. Many a B B Que is held in the very private rear garden in the heart of the City's best Residential precinct.

The Sumptuous (as seen on the "Great Outdoors") Friendly Meeting Chapel has been blessed with a beautifully restored Antique all brass Half Testa Queen Size Bed along with a deep buttoned plush velvet backplate together with a magnificent 3 piece Patterned & Cut Velvet Art Nouveaux incredibly comfortable lounge suite.

The previously lovely queen size brass & iron bed and Tapestry Merry Widow lounge suite are now at lovely Sussex cottage.

5 Star Accommodation in Adelaide5 Star Accommodation in AdelaideBishop's Garden has been awarded the highest accolade in Tourism, AAA 5 star, and is presenting great value for our new and return guests with its Heritage feel, but contemporary glass and decking private garden outlook. The intimate spa Bathroom has enjoyed a discreet level of fun.

Our room service has been incredibly popular, especially the new "Beyond India" Menu, although "Scuzzi" is still a favorite.

Don Bradman's armchairs in Melbourne Street's Cafe Cottage have been sat in with dignity and relish, especially during the past years test matches at the best oval in the world, Adelaide Oval
(Particularly as we have now visited Lords in London)

Stanley Mews Cottage with its 2 storey North facing Sun friendly living room was especially sought after during our '03 Winter.

The Fire Station Inn featured yet again on a National Television Travel show bringing many new admirers & families taking advantage of its Disney like characteristics. Even a number of retired Firemen. Rodney was also able to procure more Children's Fire Books, during his visit to Canada. A number of Guests have bought souvenirs from the in-house display cabinet. A few have even purchased from the range of lovely Fire Engine pedal cars Rodney sells in his showrooms.

After following up a guests suggestion (in 2000) of a b-b-que for the ultra private Loggia suite in the Fire Station Inn, Rodney is still waiting to award a bottle of 'Bent Creek' wine to the 1st user.

The Residency Penthouse suite has again been an utter surprise to our international guests. Having twice stayed here with my wife Regina for a week over the new year holiday period entertaining our friends and guests we found it amazingly easy to use - even though we were only 5oo meters from our house Palmview, it was like a luxury Holiday at a Resort. The ease of visiting the vast array of top Restaurants, the room service, the privacy & especially the sun deck with its table and chairs and a small portable electric B B Que.

Paprika Cottage ( in the Grounds of Buxton Manor) was fitted with trapeze lighting (similar to our contemporary non-heritage William Townhouse) which shows graphically the splendid original Oregon beams & western red cedar tongue and grooved ceiling lining boards.

The rare antique timber queen size bed and the Heritage king size spa bathroom are as popular as ever; especially since at last we have some excellent photos on our web site.

Many of our guests enjoyed the complimentary wood fires in the antique but efficient Pot belly stove over winter in Paprika Cottage

In Chapel cottage the Boomerang Collection increasingly attracts attention together with the excellent ducted heating and cooling Brian Lane installed.

Rodney Twiss with Rob KentOur Breakfast choices have received many compliments over the year, with their generosity, value for money and fresh premium branded local products. The 3 seeded bread from Rob Kents "Bakery On O'Connell" is proving very popular as our guests seek more and more healthy products.

For our local guests, weddings and especially Anniversaries have been most popular including Candle light dinners at "The Manse", coupled with Romantic Spa Packs, champagne & a long comfortable 'sleephaven' sleep.

Many of our guests have brought to our attention the excellence in food at the Amarin and Beyond India - our two highly recommended choices in North Adelaide. The Barbaro family are much thanked for their generous service every day of the year. Peter Howell at the Wellington Hotel is well sought after by the hearty eater in a location that always reminds me of Savannah Georgia.
